Getting started

My wife and I have been hosting Halloween parties annually for years now and we’ve found that mixing some of our favorite things makes for a great event.

  • Costumes & Cosplay
  • Boardgames
  • Spooky Decorations (we are up to five or six huge totes full now)

And while not all of our friends enjoy board games as much as we do it is a great chance to socialize and get pictures of everyone in their amazing costumes. We’ve also found that this big event is the best time for us to play some of our rarely played big games that are best with groups or games we don’t own that friends bring.

This year I asked myself “Are there any good events in Appleton during Halloween”? After talking to people I found out about the annual Children’s Hospital Costume Party (which is happening Friday night this year), but besides that, there’s a bar crawl.

I also learned about Pheonix Con, which is a pretty big convention that is now in its 3rd year here in Appleton. I’m interested in going to it this year, but the timing is not ideal. Usually in August I’m out camping, backpacking, kayaking, cruizing on my motorcycle, or anything outside every weekend I can while summer is still in full swing. So the idea of being indoors for a big multi-day event even if it sounds like it’d be right up my alley isn’t a good fit from a timing perspective. Boardgame season is really when it gets cold in Wisconsin for me.
